Seen Along Interstate 68 in western Maryland


Wonder how this mountain came to be named. Just seems a dicey appellation in this day and age. Yet there it is.

It was named in the late 1700s as a result of the story of a confrontation between explorers in the area and local natives. According to the story, a black slave of one of the explorers died in the battle, and the mountain was named in his honor. You can read more about it here
